hey everyone! long time no see.

school is winding up quickly. i essentially have to write 5 10-15 page papers in the next <STRIKE>two weeks</STRIKE>10 days (holy crap).

meanwhile it's time to move again soon. moving again. sigh. once in 1996. three times in 1997. twice in 1998. twice in 1999. twice in 2000. twice in 2001. twice in 2002. once in 2003. twice in 2005. once in 2006. hopefully i can stay in one place for a long while this time ... maybe even more than 18 months!

along with trying to finish up classes with sufficient credits to graduate, i have to make sure that all of my things are in order with school. my bursar bill is paid off ... but as of today i owed overdue fines at the law library. i kept a few books a couple days late earlier in the semester and when i returned them the librarian told me the fine was $375. three hundred seventy five dollars. US dollars. i was like "are you serious? okay i can't pay that right now." it must have been like $50 per book per day, or maybe they were charging by the hour because one of the books was especially rare or something? ugh. sadly, this school has taken so much money from me already, i figured that fine was probably standard.

so i saved up some money to pay the overdue fine. and then i procrastinated a bit on paying it, til the school e-mailed saying that all monies owed to the school had to be paid by may 1 in order to get state bar association applications approved. finally, today ... in the pouring rain, mflsitwww and i went out to run errands and stopped by the law library to pay my fines. the librarian swiped my school id and reminded me "three seventy five" so i handed him my credit card.

"oh no. checks or cash only."

what the heck? argh. fortunately, i happened to be rolling a few benjamins deep (don't ask) that mflsitwww was holding for me (besides being my bodyguard, she's also my accountant) and i handed the guy four hundred dollar bills.

"what? no."

he looked at me dismayed. or maybe it was confused. whatever it was -- let's call it the "skunk eye" -- but it all came to light as he explained ...

"it's three dollars and seventy five cents."

it's deep into the night and i'm about to go to bed here in the basement of my brother's house outside of portland, oregon. my whole family is here and in a few hours i'll be woken up by three excited nephews and one excited niece and we'll all run upstairs and exchange gifts and cards and celebrate a wonderful day.

so before i head off to sleep, i want to send out merry Christmas greetings to all of you out there who might be reading this message. may yours be a day full of warmth and merriment. may you bring joy to the lives of others, just as they would bring joy to yours. and may the spirit of the holiday fill your heart, upwards and outwards, with thankfulness for the great blessing that we celebrate today.

but really, it should be the same thing every day. the last few years i've always put up a post about "a charlie brown christmas". you would be bored with it by now i'm sure (if you didn't love it so much! ) so as i was about to post this, i was thinking ... really we should spend all year in the Christmas spirit, don't you think? thinking of giving before receiving, spending time with loved ones like family and friends, and most of all being thankful for every blessing you have and for the chance to live life through good fortune and bad ... if that's not Christmas to you, then you can skip this post i suppose. of course, if you want something more titillating ... you're on the internet. it's not hard to find!

well i know my posts in the last year have become much less verbose and interesting to read. the poems have fallen off ... they tend to form in short verses in my head in those moments before sleep sets in. the wild parties at gun dealers' lofts and bowling in robes at the port authority happens much less frequently in my life nowadays. but i do still bump around with my headphones here and there, and i suppose i could report more often about the celebrities i skate past or dine with. i'm a bit surprised myself that i didn't comment on the democratic sweep in the mid-term election (ho-hum ... we'll see if they can actually do something with this opportunity) or neil cavuto on fox news declaring that teaching kids about environmental responsibility is an insidious part of the liberal agenda.

no, i'd much rather go back to what tickles me today. no, not this (if neil cavuto thinks happy feet is bad ... what's he think about that??) ... but

which was referred to the Committee on Education and the Workforce

RESOLUTION

RESOLUTION

<btitle />Congratulating The Ohio State University and the University of Michigan on the 100th football game between the two teams and recognizing their rivalry as the greatest sports rivalry in history.</btitle />

Whereas The Ohio State University and the University of Michigan began their football rivalry in 1897 when the Michigan Wolverines defeated the Ohio State Buckeyes by a score of 34 to 0 in Ann Arbor, Michigan;

Whereas Michigan dominated the series from 1897 to 1912, compiling a record of twelve wins, no losses, and two ties against Ohio State in non-conference matchups;

Whereas in 1918, Michigan defeated Ohio State in the first conference game between the two teams, bringing the fledgling rivarly to what eventually became the Big Ten Conference;

Whereas in 1919, Ohio State defeated Michigan for the first time by a score of 13 to 3, earning the initial of three consecutive victories that allowed the Buckeyes to overcome the Wolverines' dominance in the series;

Whereas Michigan won the next five games before Ohio State finished the 1920's with two consecutive victories, bringing the conference rivalry to a record of seven to five in favor of Michigan;

Whereas from 1930 to 1933, Michigan won three of four games against Ohio State enroute to claiming four conference titles and two national championships;

Whereas Ohio State was victorious in the next four games, shutting out Michigan each time and scoring 112 points;

Whereas Michigan opened the 1950's with an upset victory in the `Snow Bowl' by defeating new Ohio State Head Coach Woody Hayes in his first game against Michigan;

Whereas over the next 18 years, Woody Hayes led Ohio State to a record of twelve wins and six losses against Michigan, turning the tide of the rivalry strongly in favor of the Buckeyes;

Whereas in 1969, former Ohio State assistant and new Michigan Head Coach Bo Schembechler led the Wolverines to an upset victory over his old boss Woody Hayes, defeating the previously unbeaten and number one ranked Buckeyes by a score of 24 to 12;

Whereas four times in the next six years both Ohio State and Michigan entered the rivalry game ranked among the top five college football teams in the country;

Whereas from 1970 to 1975, the Buckeyes prevailed over the Wolverines four times, defeating an unbeaten Michigan team in each game;

Whereas in 1978 the battle between Coach Hayes and Coach Schembechler known as the `10-Year War' ended with a Michigan victory, giving Coach Schembechler a record of five wins, four losses, and one tie against his former coach and mentor;

Whereas in the next nine years Ohio State Head Coach Earl Bruce posted a record of five wins and four losses against Schembechler's Wolverines, completing a 20 year stretch where neither team won three games in a row;

Whereas from 1988 to 2000, Michigan reigned supreme in the rivalry by posting a record of ten wins, two losses, and one tie over archrival Ohio State, spoiling undefeated Buckeye seasons in 1993, 1995, and 1996;

Whereas in 2001 and 2002, new Head Coach Jim Tressel revived the Buckeye program by becoming only the second Ohio State coach in history to begin his career with two wins and no losses against Michigan;

Whereas since 1935 the Ohio State versus Michigan game has traditionally been the final game of the regular season for both teams;

Whereas since the tradition began, Ohio State and Michigan have decided the Big Ten Conference Championship amongst themselves 19 times and the outcome of the game has affected the determination of the conference champion an additional 21 times;

Whereas together the Ohio State and Michigan football programs have 9 Heisman Trophy winners, 18 National Championships, 69 Big Ten titles, and more than 1,500 victories;

Whereas the ESPN television network has rated the Ohio State versus Michigan football matchup as the greatest sports rivalry in history;

Whereas the Ohio State versus Michigan rivalry has grown beyond football and bragging rights and now contributes greatly to charitable causes including an annual blood donation battle to benefit the Red Cross and food collection for food banks; and

Whereas on November 22, 2003, the Ohio State Buckeyes will visit the Michigan Wolverines at Michigan Stadium in the 100th meeting between the two football teams: Now, therefore, be it

Resolved, That the House of Representatives--

(1) congratulates The Ohio State University Buckeyes and the University of Michigan Wolverines on the 100th football game of their rivalry; and

(2) recognizes The Ohio State University Buckeyes and the University of Michigan Wolverines football game as the greatest sports rivalry in history.

Thursday, November 02, 2006

<IMG style="BORDER-TOP-WIDTH: 0px;
oh ... hahah, i've forgotten to mention on my xanga. did you know that we have a new member of our household? my roommate got a dog about a month ago. say hello to 3 month old rigby!

he's a beagle. and he's very curious. we house-trained him pretty quick but he can be a bit of a spazz sometimes. the best way to calm him down is to take him for long walks. i took him for a 30 minute walk last weekend and he pretty much passed out as soon as he got home (after gulping down a bowl of cold cold water). hahaha. here's some post-walk pics:

so, i know most of you guys don't watch baseball. or really give two craps about baseball. that's why no one has really said anything about how well my beloved deeee-troit tigers are playing these days. but anyhoo ...

now that baseball is in the playoffs, fox sports has taken over the broadcasting. that means we get to hear the lovely melody of joe buck's play-by-play and witty color commentary and analysis by big lou pinella and former major leaguer steve lyons.

er ... scratch that.

apparently steve lyons got fired after last night's mets/cardinals game for a racist comment direct against ol' big lou.

"DETROIT (AP) -- Fox baseball broadcaster Steve Lyons has been fired for making a racially insensitive comment directed at colleague Lou Piniella's Hispanic heritage on the air during Game 3 of the American League championship series.

...

In the second inning of Friday's game between Detroit and Oakland, Piniella talked about the success light-hitting A's infielder Marco Scutaro had in the first round of the playoffs. Piniella said that slugger Frank Thomas and Eric Chavez needed to contribute, comparing Scutaro's production to finding a "wallet on Friday" and hoping it happened again the next week.

Later, Piniella said the A's needed Thomas to get "en fuego" -- hot in Spanish -- because he was currently "frio" -- or cold. After Brennaman praised Piniella for being bilingual, Lyons spoke up.

Lyons said that Piniella was "hablaing Espanol" -- butchering the conjugation for the word "to speak" -- and added, "I still can't find my wallet."

"I don't understand him, and I don't want to sit too close to him now," Lyons continued.

Fox executives told Lyons after the game he had been fired."
